What is platonic love?

Platonic love is any type of affective or idealized relationship and free of any type of sexual interest between the parties , such as a pure friendship, between two people.

Platonic love can also be an impossible, difficult or unrequited love.

This term refers to the concept of the “ world of ideas ” introduced by Plato.

In which perfect ideas exist , but, for us, intangible, while in the tangible world to which we belong, there are only imperfect projections of these ideas.

The term platonic comes from the Latin ” platonicus “. It was first used by the Florentine Neoplatonist philosopher Marsilio Ficino in the 15th century as a synonym for Socratic love .

Both expressions refer to a love focused on the beauty of a person’s character and intelligence, and not on their physical appearance.

The expression saw its concept change thanks to the work of Mr. William Davenant , “ Platonic Lovers ” (1636).

Where the English poet refers to love as described in Plato’s Symposium, which states that love is the root of all virtues and truth .

Plato and love

Platonic love is not based on an interest, but on virtue. Plato also created the theory of the world of ideas , where everything was perfect and in the real world everything was an imperfect copy of this world of ideas.

In this context, based on the logic of Plato , Platonic love , which belongs to the intangible world , is the purest and most virtuous form of love.

To live a platonic love is to live simultaneously in two different realities . Plato says: ” he who loves very much, stops living in himself and lives in the love of him “.

Therefore, platonic love , or anything platonic, refers to something that is perfect, but does not exist in the real world, only in the world of ideas.

Platonic love is understood as a love at a distance, that does not approach, does not touch, does not involve, is made up of fantasies and idealization, where the object of love is the perfect being, possessor of all the good qualities and without defects.
