In the ICC World Cup 2023, Afghanistan achieved a significant victory over Pakistan, winning by 8 wickets. This historic triumph marked Afghanistan’s first-ever win against Pakistan in the one day internationals. Before this remarkable achievement, Afghanistan had stunned the defending champions, England, in the World tournament.
The match, which took place on a slow track in Chennai, saw Afghanistan successfully chasing down a target of 283. Ibrahim Zadran (87) and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (65) delivered an outstanding performance, forging a formidable partnership of 130 runs for the opening wicket, effectively thwarting Babar Azam’s Pakistan. The finishing touches were added by Rahmat Shah, who remained unbeaten at 77, and Hashmatullah Shahidi, not out at 48, securing the victory for Afghanistan.
Earlier in the game, Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam, won the toss and chose to bat first. Azam led from the front, contributing 74 runs to the team’s total. Abdullah Shafique (58), Shadab Khan (40), and Iftikhar Ahmed (40) also made significant contributions, boosting Pakistan’s final score.
This win marked Pakistan’s third consecutive loss in the World Cup, with only two victories to their name. As a result, their way to semi-finals appears to be challenging and difficult.
