What is a Concept Store?

Meaning of Concept Store

A concept store is a retail store that goes beyond simply selling products and instead appeals to a general lifestyle by offering products that fit the desires of those participating in a particular social scene.

Instead of simply offering a selection of standard products for purchase, this type of store sells products that appeal to a particular segment of consumers. This particular segment, and the approach taken to attract it, can vary quite a bit between stores.

A concept store often has a unique take on the group it appeals to, such as haute couture, streetwear, or hipster fashion.

Some offer name brand labels at a discounted price.

While there is no single form that a concept store typically takes, it is generally designed to appeal to a certain segment of the population.

A store that is meant to appeal to those interested in haute couture, for example, might offer clothes from well-known designers, as well as shoes, perfumes, accessories, and even electronics that are established brands.

These products are often the ones you see in fashion and entertainment magazines, and the inventory is likely to change frequently to stay on trend. This separates such a store from a retail business that generally offers many of the same products from year to year.

Concept stores often try to appeal to certain groups rather than general consumers.

The layout and aesthetics of a store is also likely to be quite distinct, unlike a standard department store or discount retail store.

Since the store itself has a general concept regarding the merchandise available, the design and decoration of the store often matches that concept. A store intended to appeal to “urban” or “street” trends may have bare brick walls, perhaps decorated with artistic graffiti, and a design that reinforces the store concept.

On the other hand, a concept store for the “hipster” culture might feature dark walls, stark lighting, and play indie music that is popular in hipster circles.

Concept stores can lease an empty store in a mall for a limited time.

It can also be linked to a particular individual, usually a celebrity or someone involved in the entertainment industry.

This type of store usually uses the name of the celebrity in advertising or the name of the store and sells merchandise associated with that person, such as clothing or brands worn by the celebrity.

Since this type of store is often designed around a particular fashion, social structure, or cultural trend, these stores may need to reinvent themselves to ensure they keep up with popular fashions.

A high fashion concept store typically only carries designer labels. They may target a specific clientele, such as women planning a wedding.
