Meaning of Understanding

Comprehension is the act of understanding, understanding and assimilating something . It is considered a cognitive process , where the interpretation of a certain thing is necessary so that it can later be understood by the individual.

When a person is said to understand something, it means that he is endowed with perfect intellectual mastery over the subject.

Understanding can still represent someone’s feeling of benevolence and complacency , that is, when there is an empathy towards another person’s emotions.

In fact, this is an interpretation used by philosophy to refer to the empathic behavior of people who analyze different social, ideological, cultural processes, etc.

  • Synonyms of understanding are: clarity, perception, awareness, participation, assimilation, discernment, compliance, indulgence, tolerance and vision.
  • Antonyms of understanding are: ignorance, misunderstanding, complication, disdain, intransigence and aversion.

Comprehension and Interpretation

For there to be an understanding of something, such as a text, for example, its interpretation is necessary . For this, the individual must be able to reveal the meaning of textual constructions , in order to understand the meaning of the context of a sentence.

 

Therefore, when there is no correct interpretation of the message, consequently there is no correct assimilation of it.

The concept of understanding refers to the action of understanding and the faculty, the ability to understand and assimilate things.

Understanding is, in turn, a tolerant attitude and the set of qualities that make up an idea.

Text comprehension (the text), on the other hand, is the process of making meaning through learning the relevant ideas of a text and the relationship it establishes with previous ideas.

In this process, the link interacts with the text.

Comprehensive understanding requires anticipation, prediction, inference, and paraphrasing skills , among others.

A text can be understood at the literal level (focusing on the information explicitly exposed), at the inferential level (when looking for relationships that are more readable), at a critical level (questions are given, with foundations) at the affective level (including the dimensions prior cognitive and emotional response), for example.

Hermeneutics

It is worth noting that hermeneutics (“the art of explaining / interpreting”) is the area that studied the interpretation of texts , to determine the exact meaning of words through any expressed expression.

Finally, we can add that, from the perspective of logic , the understanding of the set of characters common to a concept. So, the concept of “man” includes the terms “animal” and “rational”.
