What is Clerocracy?

Meaning of Clerocracy

Clergy is a form of government characterized by control exercised by a group of priests or religious leaders, that is, representatives of the clergy .

This is not always the case in theocracy , as its leader does not necessarily have to be a member of the clergy , but must instead follow the laws of their holy book. The clergy concentrates political power not in the hands of a specific social class.

But against his power in the clergy, who, of course, will exercise governance based on the religious precepts he represents.

We can also remember many other forms of political organization , such as oligarchy, tyranny, plutocracy or technocracy. Currently, theocracy is very conspicuous in countries with a predominantly Islamic culture.

This representative model of government is close to the once-existing idea of divine monarchy . Theocratic leaders also rule in the name of a god, in this case, Allah.

Yet theocratic regimes in the East fanatically follow what is said in the book they hold sacred, the Koran, which, like the Bible, was written many centuries ago.

As a result, political and religious leaders determine rules of conduct that are sometimes extreme and prejudiced. That is why women cannot show any part of their bodies on public roads and the faithful commit terrorist acts in the name of the divinity that represents them.

There are several ways to organize a society politically. This, by the way, has been a debated topic since ancient times. Plato and Aristotle, for example, already discussed beneficial and evil political representations.

Ironically, we experience both in the course of human history. Since men began to live in community, disputes over political power have become obvious and, at times, extreme.

Political Power and Economic Power

Political power is different from economic power, it is not rich in money, but it carries a great ability to influence people. It is clear that, illegally, some politicians achieved a large increase in assets, but this is not the main reason why, as we have seen today, there is a great dispute to keep representative positions filled. The privileges are undeniable and are at the heart of the matter.

The most popular political representation of our contemporary times is, without a doubt, democracy. Through this political organization, the citizens that make up a particular nation elect their leaders directly or indirectly.

Democracy brings with it the idea of popular participation, delegating to the people the ability to decide their destinies . However, this is a political notion closely related to the beginning of the 20th century and the success of liberal ideals.

Democracy was not always the dominant form of political representation. For centuries, the monarchy has guided the political organizations of various nations and kingdoms around the world. Organization in which there is a sovereign leader, the king or the emperor, who, alone, decides the direction of his people, in fact, of his subjects.

For a long time, even these kings were considered direct representatives of the gods on Earth. That is to say, they were monarchies that, through divine power, granted the leadership of a people to a single individual.
