What is Cardboard?

Meaning of cardboard

Cardstock is the term used to describe a type of paper that is stronger and more durable than traditional writing or printing papers. Basically, cardstock is thicker and heavier than regular paper.

It is used in the making and manufacturing of postcards, playing cards, and other similar printed products. Craft stores and office supply stores are typical retailers for this specialty paper.

Cardstock is widely used for handmade greeting cards.

Card stock is measured and described by weight or thickness depending on its retail origin. In most countries, it is measured by gram weight and refers to paper weighing between 135 and 300 grams per square meter (50 to 110 pounds per square meter).

It is sometimes labeled as a value followed by the pound sign (#). For example: 80#. Material that is measured by thickness is described in points or thousandths of an inch. For example, paper that is 0.25 mm (0.01 inches) thick is described as 10 point paper.

Cardstock paper is thicker than regular printing paper.

In addition to its thicker-than-normal composition, cardstock is also flexible. It comes in a variety of colors, varying in tints and shades, as well as textures. The diversity of this type of paper, compared to thinner and less durable paper, makes it an ideal craft material.

It is widely used for handmade greeting cards, scrapbook pages, posters and other paper crafts. It cuts cleanly with sharp implements and is flexible enough to carefully bend and fold or roll for other uses.

It is also compatible with specialized cutting equipment that automatically cuts shapes and letters from templates.

In addition to paper crafts, cardstock is also useful for printing business cards, invitations, and other practical uses. Many computer printers have adjustable settings for special papers, making it easy to print projects at home.

Cardstock isn’t typically used for photography projects, such as advertisements, but it’s particularly useful for a wide variety of craft and commercial uses.

It’s literally available in almost any color, pattern, and texture and can be purchased at craft supply stores, office supply stores, and school supply stores.

Some stocks are perforated for printing business cards or invitations.

For paper crafts, instructions often call for specific or mil weight paper, however, if you’re crafting an original project, it’s best to experiment with paper of different weight, thickness, and texture.

Some textures are more absorbent than others, which can affect print projects. If you have a specific paper project in mind, ask a local print shop representative what types of paper will work best.

Cardstock is ideal for use in paper crafts, including scrapbooking.
